Please provide a company background including when it was established, where it is located, how many staff you employ etc.


Established in 1795 in Ashbourne Derbyshire and Fazeley Staffordshire, Bowmer Bond Narrow Fabrics Ltd is a UK based manufacturer of webbings and tapes



Please provide an overview of the products and services offered and areas of specialisation.


The business has grown by identifying niche markets and forming close technical communication with current and potential customers. Offering products to a wide range of market segments has also been an important part of our success.



How did you find out about emita and what benefits do you find the most valuable?

EMITA approached us several years ago and we liked the idea of belonging to a locally based group, where we could network with other companies. Networking and keeping a positive, opportunistic attitude ensure that we get the most from our EMITA membership.



How long has your company been active in the export / import market and which countries do you currently trade with?

We have been an active exporter for over 30 years and we trade with more than 25 countries. 



What made you decide to expand your business overseas?

Expansion overseas allowed us to grow at a time when the home market had been flat and in decline. Exporting also helped us to mitigate risk; when some markets are down, others can be up. Exporting has driven innovation and product development, leading to positive sales trends in the medium term, which has lessened our reliance on the UK market.



What has been your biggest exporting / importing challenge?


Quite often the biggest challenge is in defining the future customers’ needs, as often they don’t really know exactly what they want! Often we have to behave as Technical Consultants to ensure that the customer is delighted with our products.


What’s the most helpful piece of international trade advice you have received?


Never give up, think positive and keep an eye open for opportunities.



What does the future hold? Any particular markets you are looking to target next?

All markets are affected by “the big picture” so we continue to hope that the Euro Land can truly solve the crisis of over indebted economies. Looking ahead we believe that more manufacturing work will continue to be repatriated to Europe from China, which can only be a good thing.
