Please provide a company background including when it was established, where it is located, how many staff you employ etc.
Based in Lutterworth, Leicestershire TS components was formed in 2007 to initially distribute Isolation Transformers worldwide. The telecoms industry was changing dramatically to digital equipment and we recognized there would be a niche market for analogue parts and so increased our stock to cope with anticipated demand.
This decision proved to be the right one as we expanded and became a limited company in 2009. At the same time we took on an additional full time member of staff bringing the total to 3 plus several part time.
The last 3 years have seen us become major suppliers to Siemens both here in the UK and Brazil. During this time we also expanded into wound bobbins and LVDT transformers which has seen the company grow by 700%.
Our strength is in managing projects locally, introducing low cost manufacturing methods, quality standards through PPAP submissions and testing. With the development of new products to provide PoE (Power over Ethernet) our sights are now set higher than we could have possibly hoped for only four years ago.
Please provide an overview of the products and services offered and areas of specialisation.
Our Isolation transformers are used in many diverse applications from Telecoms to Military use to drinks dispensing machines, in fact anything that has a mains input and a telephone connection.
Our product range is now diverse supplying transformers and inductors for Traffic Signals and public signage, LVDT assemblies for the accurate operation of Hydraulic equipment and wound bobbins for active engine mounts in the automotive sector.
However, our latest development of matching transformers to power standard IEEE computer cables for the Security industry is just beginning and will promote the company into greater things.
Our total range of products can be seen on the website. www.tscomponents.com
How did you find out about emita and what benefits do you find the most valuable?
We discovered Emita by enrolling on the UKTI Passport to Export Scheme and appreciate the seminars offered plus contact with other companies based in our region.
How long has your company been active in the export / import market and which countries do you currently trade with?
Our very first order was from the Thales in the USA and we now supply to the following countries: Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada, plus most of The EEC and Norway.
What made you decide to expand your business overseas?
The business is currently 70% based in the UK and we feel that the new product development (PoE) will require us to promote these to customers /designers in Europe although the end users may probably be Asia. Our initial emphasis will be in Germany and France.
What has been your biggest exporting / importing challenge?
Our experience with logistics has always worked well with the import of parts from Sri Lanka and China running smoothly and quality never being an issue. We were also very fortunate that the export customers have agreed to Pro Forma invoicing, but with expansion into higher Volume sales plus possibly Agents / Distributors the need for finance controls is paramount. This may be the biggest problem we experience and is one of the main reasons we contacted UKTI.
What’s the most helpful piece of international trade advice you have received?
Presentations on choosing Agents and Distributors.
What does the future hold? Any particular markets you are looking to target next?
As part of the investigation into feasibility for new products in conjunction with UKTI we visited the Electronica exhibition in Germany. This experience determined that our target market was with embedded system designers and the security industry. We will therefore initially concentrate on Germany where the business sector is very strong in embedded systems and France where a great emphasis is placed on security.
We will also concentrate on the web site to promote ourselves worldwide.
